Mirror with Ballet Barre

Danceability in a room is important. I strongly agree with Anais Nin when she says even the way furniture is arranged in a room can prevent things from happening. There was something a bit oppressive about that wall that cut the space short as you can see from the before photo. I decided to create as much light and openness as possible by putting a glass frame above the door and putting a mirror with a rounded top (referencing the rounded columns found throughout the flat) directly opposite the bay window. It’s important to think what one will reflect inwards when you place such a large mirror opposite a window but luckily in this case there are trees outside. This mirror not only doubles the outside light but also the verdant jungle-like ambiance of the room and creates an idea of more space and symmetry by duplicating the room in its reflection. To make the room more spacious I always arrange furniture so it can be danced in. Here I took away the mottled old carpet and added walnut parquet flooring. Additionally, I put a brass ballet barre on the mirror to add to the art deco design and ‘in motion’ aura of the space.
