Witchy Kitchen

This is quite a tiny space and originally the huge fridge was blocking the entryway which doesn’t let the energy move freely. Some people make the mistake of trying to use light colours in a naturally dark, small space but I personally like to embrace the qualities inherent in a space. If it is dark, so be it! I consider the kitchen to be a direct contrast to the larger, white sitting room so here I painted the cupboards an opaque black. Sometimes blackness can create the illusion of depth in a room, instead of making it seem smaller.

I knocked out the false ceiling to reveal original cornicing and archways. This let me add double stacked cupboards for more storage. I put inbuilt units for the washing machine, fridge etc. so everything is a seamless black and copper. I was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s idea of science and a witches’ apothecary. I personally don’t like to cook but I thought if I could romanticize the process by making it witchier I might enjoy it more. I added dangling lights, all different sizes of bulbs to copper fittings on the higher ceiling and a geometric floor similar to one I saw in Sicily. I wanted the wood countertops to reflect the light and bounce it onto the copper splash back which I left untreated to get a natural patina. I covered the walls in Fornasetti Il Sole wallpaper in black and copper. I didn’t want to use black on the wall with the window so the light could reflect a bit better. I also put lights in the cabinets so my goblets and teacups get a nice eerie glow.
